SPE Granted Accreditation by United Nations Environment Assembly

We are excited to share a significant development from one of our trade associations. The Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) has recently been granted accreditation by the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA). This noteworthy distinction establishes SPE as a primary constituent within UNEA’s esteemed scientific and technological community, a group that includes only eighty-seven organizations globally, with just twenty-five based in the United States.

SPE President Conor Carlin celebrated this achievement, stating, “This accreditation is a pivotal moment for SPE and its stakeholders. As a science- and engineering-based community, SPE now can influence global environmental policies on plastics based on objective science, reinforcing our commitment to sustainable industry practices.”

With observer status to UNEA, SPE can now participate in UNEA and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) activities, particularly focusing on the end-of-life management of plastics. SPE’s involvement includes participation in the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution, which aims to develop a legally binding international instrument to address plastic pollution.
Carlin emphasizes, “This is a significant step for SPE, marking the beginning of continued dialogue and engagement with global stakeholders. We are eager to contribute our expertise to future plastic treaties.”

SPE members are encouraged to engage in UNEP’s work through SPE by signing up to receive updates, provide input on deliberations, and participate in crafting statements to UNEP. Interested members can contact President Conor Carlin at ccarlin@4spe.org.

We are proud to support SPE in its efforts towards sustainability and global environmental stewardship.
